Yesterday was my first Independence Day. I baked cheesecake, decorated in red, blue and white and brought to a barbecue party at friends house. I thought there would be flags everywhere in the city, but it wasn’t like that in San Francisco. There was a big fireworks show at night but I became too sleepy, I just listened to the sound in bed…

昨日のアメリカ独立記念日は私にとっては初のイベント。チーズケーキを焼いて星条旗の赤、青、白で飾り、友人宅でのバーベキュー・パーティーに持っていった。街中が星条旗だらけになるかと思いきや、サンフランシスコではいたって普通の休日だった。夜には花火が派手にあがっていたけれど、疲れてしまい居眠りしながら音を聞いていただけだった。

It’s been a while ago that I finally managed to go to SF Underground Market. The name doesn’t mean that the market is on the underground… don’t worry it’s not illegal either.

ちょっと前の話になるけれど、気になっていたアンダーグラウンド・マーケットにやっと行ってきた。ちなみに名前のアンダーグラウンドとは、地下にあるという意味ではなく、秘密のという感じ。でも違法マーケットではないのでご安心。

Even we are very good at making something at home, selling foods in public places is not easy. We need licenses and a commercial kitchen to produce foods to sell. But forageSF made a good venue that we can buy/sell products that have been produced in home kitchens. We just need to sign up for a free membership to the SF Underground Market. And of course, to be a vendor we have to be approved by forageSF.

いくら料理上手でも個人が公の場で食品を売るのはなかなか難しい。ライセンスを取得したり、業務用の厨房で調理する必要があったり。でもここでは家のキッチンで手作りした物でも問題なく売買が出来る。主催者のforageSFのサイトにある同意書にサインして会員（無料）になる事で法には触れないんだとか。もちろん売る側になるには、ちゃんとforageSFの審査を通らないといけないけど。

When I saw German Currywurst sign, I thought about C. I know he will definitely get one. But I found out that it was vegetarian Currywurst… It’s so San Franciso!

ドイツのカリーブルスト（カレーケチャップがけポークソーセージ）。相棒がいたら絶対に注文してるなと思ったら、まさかのベジタリアン用だった。サンフランシスコらしい！

There were many organic, and healthy looking stuff, like gluten-free baked goods etc. I think I want to sell some Japanese sweets.

オーガニックものはもちろん、グルテンフリーだとか体に良さそうなものが多かった。私は日本のお菓子を売りたいな。

This event started December 2009, and this was the fourth one. I actually went to the third one in March too, but there were too many people, easily more than 100 people were queuing at the entrance. I gave up. This time, it was held in a bigger venue and it was on the weekday, so there were no queue!

Next SF Underground Market is on 12 May. I’m happy that it’s a collaboration event with my favourite bike-in movie screening. The market part is from 16:00 to 19:00, and the movie screening is from 20:00. Prepare to be warm!

2009年の12月に始まって今回で4回目のアンダーグラウンド・マーケット。実は前回も会場までは行ったのだけど、入り口に長蛇の列、軽く100人は並んでいたので、諦めて帰ってきた。今回は会場が広くて、しかも平日開催だったから行列はなし。混んでいるけど。

次回は5月12日。なんとすごく楽しかったバイク・イン・ムービーとコラボ開催。映画が始まる前の16-19時までがアンダーグラウンドマーケット、その後20時からがバイク・イン・ムービー。暖かい格好して行こ！
